Went to the common bathroom where all medicinal lotions and potions are kept to get some ointment for the mosquito bites I sustained while out earlier. Yours truly is the local blood bar everywhere she goes. Opened the door and hey presto, this greeted me:
If Age Has Taught Me Anything
Monday, November 16, 2009
So I was stooping, browsing through the lower shelves of the knitting section of Kinokuniya (quite a feat when you are on stilettos) when The Girlfriend comes up and asks me if I could hang on to a book for her as her arms were full from carrying Cutie-Pie who had dosed off following a huge lunch. The Girlfriend, another girlfriend and I had just dined at the Marriott and decided to work some of it off by browsing the shops. I don't know, but I always feel there is something decidedly wicked about Lunching and Shopping on a Monday. Or maybe it's just me.
Anyhow.
So I reached out for the book and being female curious, took a cursory glance at the title:
whereupon I did a double-take and if not for perfect balance, would have fell on my hiney too.
No, no, The Girlfriend quickly protested, it's for so-and-so.
"Oh, her. Ah..."
Just so one is being clear, the so-and-so in question is in her early twenties, married and what little I know from the one and only time I met her - all is well in paradise.
*****
I can only speak for myself which is, what a difference age and life experiences can make. Fifteen years ago, I would have run out in my heels (some things don't change) and bought the very same book for Ms Stimson's tips and ammunition. Not so now. It's not because I've become complacent, far from it in fact, but I've reached the stage in my life where if my man is so easily swayed, then he's not worth keeping in the first place.

You Would Win Best Costume Design
You are imaginative, artistic, and very unique. You are a natural designer. You can picture entire movies in your head. You are incredibly visual. As long as you can remember, you've always had a flare for fashion. You like to experiment with looks. You like dressing up in costumes and outfits. And not just for Halloween!
As a child, my all-time favourite Christmas song was All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth - go figure!
Twenty odd years later, older but I'm not sure much wiser, the Christmas song that gets me going is the tongue-in-cheek Santa Baby. But not the Madonna or Kylie version, you understand. Not even Marilyn Monroe's, whom alot of people think is the original singer, a fact which irks me. The definitive version to me is by the original singer Eartha Kitt. Her rendition is that of a sexy, sophisticated lady who loves and knows she deserves the finer things in life. Other singers who have borrowed her song just come off sounding like gold digging bimbos, most notably Madonna and Marilyn Monroe. But that's just me. And forgive the slight edginess in my tone. It's the fractured molar, sore throat and fever speaking.
Santa Baby
Santa Baby, Just slip a sable under the tree For me Been an awful good girl Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa Baby, I want a yacht and really thats not Alot Been an angel all year Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa honey, one little thing I really need The deed To a platinum mine Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa cutie, and fill my stocking with a duplex And cheques Sign your 'x' on the line Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Come and trim my Christmas tree With some decorations bought at Tif-fa-ny I really do believe in you Lets see if you believe in me
Santa Baby, forgot to mention one little thing A ring I don't mean on the phone Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight Hurry down the chimney tonight Hurry...tonight
Big, Blonde and Beautiful
Sunday, November 30, 2008
I thought I'd start today, being the first day of the last month of the year and all with a song and dance. Here's Motormouth Maybelle played by Queen Latifah doing her thang with "Big, Blonde and Beautiful in the 2007 musical version of Hairspray.
I Need To Stop Being Silly

Gmail's gone and given its users the option of theme templates. I've switched mine to Teahouse and adjusted my location to Beijing.
Now it's all very mundane, nothing to whoop about except after two days, I began to realise that the background garden is time sensitive. Let me explain. Say I check my gmail at 7am in the morning. The sun's just risen and everything's still abit dusky. Lo and behold, the sun is just dawning in the garden of the Teahouse template. I check again at noon when it's nice and bright outside, it's also sunny in the garden. At night, I open it again, well, you get the picture.
On top of everything else, the main character, a Mr Fox (very reminiscent of Japanese folklore), goes about his daily business as the day progresses. At dawn he's doing Tai Chi (I kid you not!), during the day he's pottering about the garden doing this and that, having a cup of cha and what not. Just before nightfall, he's out in the garden lighting up the lanterns.
How do I know this? It is with great embarrassment I confess to checking my gmail obsessively throughout the day. Just to see what Mr Fox and his buds are up to! I am stalking a graphic image!
I've been blogging for a little over two years now and never really thought about why I do it. I just did.
So now I ask myself, why do I blog?
I can't say I'm letting go of steam since I don't gripe and certainly do not bitch on this site, well, not on private issues. I can't say it's my creative outlet either because I have other avenues for that. And I certainly can't say I do it professionally. For one thing, I'm not a writer. Sure I can string a few words together to evoke a chuckle or at least a smile but I'm no Shakespeare.
That would leave the option of fun. And that's why I really blog - for my personal pleasure. In my blog I don't want to change the world, offer deep rhetorical discussions or cure cancer. I just want it to be my own place where I talk about things I love, in this case, food and my hobbies. But mostly food. Can't stitch or craft on an empty stomach. This blog is intended as a chat between good friends. You know, the five to ten minute conversations you have just before you need do the laundry, run an errand or some mundane chore. One of those lighthearted but oh-so-good for the soul chitchats.
I've never blogged with the intention of making money off it either. That's why you don't see any ads on this site. I've been asked fairly regularly to review food related services and products and more often than not, I turn down the offer. I have a strictly no advertising rule on my blog. If I do wax lyrical about something here, you can be sure whatever it is, it's on my to-buy/to-do list if it hasn't already been bought or tried out and not because I'm trying to sell you something.
The other thing is, I've never blogged with an audience in mind. I find it more liberating this way. I write what I want and when I want. Hence, you'll never see me begin a post with "I'm sorry I haven't blogged for a long time..." Once in a while I do give a polite "Still-here-alls-well" message but only because both Mum and Mother-In-Law want to know why there haven't been any updates in more than a week. Having said that, I am happy to know people from all over the world are reading my blog. Some of you are friends to begin with, some were strangers but through the course of time, became friends and some of you left lovely comments and emails. So for this, I would like to thank you and all the others who quietly read but don't make their presence known. Thank you taking the time out of your busy day to check in on me. I really appreciate it, especially since I keep a fairly low profile and don't put my blog or myself 'out there'.
And so, the next time someone asks me, Dutchess, why do you keep a blog? I will simply reply,
Mercedes-Benz F1 TV Advert
Wednesday, October 01, 2008
We, meaning Hubs and Sonny-boy are Ferrari fan(atics) so I feel abit of a Judas posting this Mercedes-Benz ad here. But a good ad is a good ad and this left me in giggles. I especially enjoyed the surprise appearance of Mika Hakkinen at the very end. Nothing like reminding the next generation they are still earning their stripes to put everything in perspective. And if you are into behind-the-scene stuff, there's the "Making Of" video which comes directly after.
Credit to Brenda for first putting up the video on a parenting forum. Some mums there are big F1 fans but not necessarily over the racing cars per se... what cars ??!
I love online shopping (just ask Hubs!) but for the most part, shun ebay. These days, the only things I purchase from ebay are craft books and only because they are not available elsewhere online. That's because i) I hate paypal who's always messing up and freezing my account and ii) I hate having to bid for anything. I don't have the time or patience to monitor the product I want in question so more often than not, I just click on the buy now option and have it over and done with. It's all about instant gratification.
Here's a little something for ebay addicts everywhere - you know who you are!
I almost fell off my seat from laughter, thank goodness I wasn't eating or drinking at the time either. Credit to Pam for putting it up on her blog from where I got the video from. Completely unrelated but I met Pam for the first time at a gathering earlier this year in Singapore. She has a wonderful doll-like complexion which reminds me of silken tofu. And yes, Pam, we also love Discovery's Boom-Di-YaDa song the first time it was aired on the channel. Sonny-boy can sing every word of it while Hubs and I have it for our mobile ring-tones. I know!
How To Waste A Perfectly Good Saturday - Part II
Saturday, August 23, 2008
By posting a really silly entry on your blog.
Taken off a thread from the parenting forum of which I am like a stubborn stain you can't remove, it asks (and answers) the perennial question:
Why did the chicken cross the road?
For some of the replies, it's funnier if one is Singaporean or Malaysian or at least familiar with the local politics or current affairs of both countries.
Without further ado,
WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?
BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a CHANGE The chicken wanted CHANGE!
JOHN MCCAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.
HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure -- right from Day One! -- that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.......
GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.
BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What is your definition of chicken?
AL GORE: I invented the chicken!
JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.
BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken2007, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your check book. Internet Explorer is an integral part of the Chicken. This new platform is much more stable and will never cra...#@&&^(C% ......... reboot.
ABDULLAH BADAWI: We have to be fair to all chickens. Some want to cross over the road, some do not. ........ Zzzzzz ......zzzzzz ....... Now what were we talking about? Ah yes, chickens. We will form a Royal Commission to decide whether it is right for them to cross the road.
MAHATHIR: Now even the non-bumi chickens want to cross the road? How can they disrespect and disregard the bumi chickens? We must be allowed to cross over first. It is our right!
ANWAR: We have enough chickens waiting to cross over in September.
SHAHRIR: All foreign chickens are welcome in Malaysia but they must not cross over the road within 50km of the border.
LEE KUAN YEW: I am telling u that the highly paid chicken should cross the road first. It is our right to cross the road.
LEE HSIEN LOONG: Gantry points have been set up. All chickens wanting to cross the road are advised to top up their cash cards first.
WONG KAN SENG: I am sorry that the chicken was allowed to cross the road. It was an HONEST MISTAKE. Lets move on.
Butter, anyone? She may look down upon anyone who sacrifices fat for diet, but Julia Child is the grand dame of French cooking — for butter or for worse. Like Julia, you tend to enjoy the rewards of classic cooking and traditional life.
Maybe you don't whip up lobster thermidor on a nightly basis, but when you do ramp up for a special meal — entertaining friends, for example — you tend to pull out all the stops. Experience has proven that "from scratch" does tend to make a difference, so if time allows, we'd guess you like to spoil your guests with everything from fresh fish to homemade pie. That's not to say you're not up for some shortcuts in the kitchen. It's just that when it comes down to it, you like to do things right, and don't mind taking the time to make sure that happens.
LEKKER: Dutch adjective; pleasing to the sense of taste
